Lucy’s Quinceañera
April 3, 2009
I’ve lived in Texas my whole life, and in a way I find it kind of odd that I’ve never attended a Quinceañera before. That changed April 3rd when I attended the Quinceañera of a friend’s daughter. The friend, Dianna, asked me if I would take picutures. I said yes at the time, not realizing how big of an event it was going to be. The Quinceañera, or Quince años (“fifteen years” in English), is a coming of age ceremony held on a girl’s fifteenth birthday. The term Quinceaños refers to the birthday of the celebrant, and the term Quinceañera refers to the celebrant herself, but most folks refer to the event as the Quinceañera . The celebration began with a ceremony at Dianna’s church where Lucy affirmed her faith. Basically, this was like a wedding day for a teenage girl without the groom.

After the service, we headed to a banquet hall in Navasota to attend the reception. The decor of this event resembled that of a wedding. Lucy’s Quinceañera court was comprised of her friends and cousins. Even though it turned into a long-day, I had a great time and was honored to have attended this milestone event in Lucy’s life.
