90 Years, Family, Geocaching and Kite Photography
June 20, 2009
The day before Father’s Day, I drove to central Texas to spend a busy Saturday with my family. The first event of the day was a birthday celebration held in Hillsboro for my Great-Aunt, Josie. Soon afterward, my parents and I explored the area around Hillsboro while hunting geocaches. I’m glad my parents enjoy this hobby as much as I do. It’s become a tradition of ours. Every time I come home, we have to go geocaching. My mom is very competitive and always tries to be the first one to spot the cache. Following an afternoon of geocaching, we made our way to my sister’s home to celebrate Father’s Day. Before we ate, I noticed that the conditions were perfect for deploying my kite-camera rig (I always keep it in my car…just in case). Our day together concluded with us enjoying some of my sister’s great cooking. Eventually I made my way back to College Station. I had three dogs waiting for me. While Ruben and his sisters were visiting their father in South Texas, I was keeping Ruben’s Sister’s dog, Kyro.

Very nice pics Glen….
All the pictures are so good, but my favorite is the one with the dogs. It made me laugh. Thanks for making my day.
Moving to the CITY has been an adventure, and we all love it, but I sure miss those “Central Texas Sunsets!” Thanks for sharing!
Jerry
Hello Glen,
I was doing a Google search for ‘geocaching’ when I ran across your posting. Specifically, I was intrigued by your kite camera rig. Since I was a youngster I have always enjoyed flying. In fact my kids prented me with a small Chinese kite for my birthday today. Would you share how you assembled your rig, or direct me to where I could acquire the plans to build my own? As I am employed by a camera company, I now have collected several small digital cameras which I would consider using for this purpose.
Regards,
John

Howdy John,
If you’re not familiar with CHDK, follow this link.

You can hack the firmware of most powershots to give them built-in interferometers. This is the key to making a good camera kite rig. Once you set the camera aloft, it can snap shots for as long as the memory card and batteries last.
As far as kites and camera mounts go, google “KAP”
I made my own picavet mount. http://arch.ced.berkeley.edu/kap/equip/picavet.html
Just remember to keep it simple and lite.
BTW: You can also buy KAP kits.

Good luck. KAP can be fun, as long as the weather cooperates.
