Exploring Lake Somerville
August 22, 2009
I once met a woman from Poitier, France who had visited the Statue of Liberty in NYC five times, but had NEVER been to the Eiffel Tower. She’s not the only person I’ve encountered who has traveled far to sightsee, while giving little thought to places nearby. I’m guilty of doing the same thing, but this week, I decided to change that. The first nearby-place I wanted to explore was Lake Somerville. Shortly before the weekend arrived, I convinced Ruben to go on this little adventure. We spent the entire day driving around the whole lake, visiting every park. Access to the lake from these parks was surprisingly limited (due to the drought we’re experiencing in this region of the state). I think we might return later this fall to enjoy the mountain-bike trails that connect the two state parks on the West side of the lake.
- Ready to hit the road!
- Drive Careful
- We saw a lot of deer
- Lake Somerville
- Spanish Moss
- The Lake was four feet below normal
- Ruben at Lake Somerville
- There was no easy way to get from park to park – we did a lot of driving
- Did I mention we saw deer?
- This should be a boat ramp
- The state parks had the best facilities, but the poorest access to the lake
- When we got back to College Station, Ruben had to have his Rosie’s Pho fix.
