On the Right Track

February 13, 2010
This week, I started doing some track-work on my new layout. Before I began, I sorted all the old track I had accumulated over the years and thought maybe I’d just buy all new track for this project. It didn’t take me long to rethink that idea once I discovered that prices related to this hobby have almost doubled since 2000 and sad to say in 2010 all of the track components are now made in China. (Maybe my “made in the USA” parts will become collector items?) Considering the cost of buying “new” I decided to use every bit of old track I already had. The first track I installed was on the tunnel section of the High Sierra module. Once I made sure everything was in place, I taped the track down and glued it to the support surface. After the glue had cured, I tested the track by running a little 4-4-0 locomotive across every rail joint…so far, so good.

This is very cool, well maybe not “cool” but very neato. Actually I thought about you the other day when we visited one of the many Hobby (toys for grown ups) shops. We were looking for materials to add to the bases of our DnD miniatures, yes insert nerd joke here, when we saw a massive train set in the middle of production. They sell materials for making the landscaping and apparently they give demonstrations. Anyway after I thought to myself “I bet Glen would get a kick out of this” I had a private chuckle at the fact that you weren’t there to take a picture so that I could show you.
Ah, thanks for sharing…I wish we had a hobby shop like that here, but all we’ve got is Hobby Lobby.
