Big Bend Winter Wonderland

December 26, 2015

Since my last adventure in Terlingua (this summer) my dad has wanted to get back there as soon as possible. During the holiday break, my nephew (Clay) and I accompanied my dad back to the ranch. It was in the 70s when we arrived, but things changed quickly in less than a day. In a few hours the temperature dropped dramatically. When we woke the next morning, we were surrounded by inches of snow and it continued to fall the rest of the morning. We were so lucky to be in Big Bend National Park the day after the big snow storm. Clay and I spent the entire day hiking to the top of Emory Peak and back again. It was a great little adventure.

On the way home, we passed through Alpine, home of Sul Ross State University (any Aggie should recognize that name). We also spotted the Sunset Limited (the train I took to LA this past summer). We drove over the Pecos and stopped at the Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center in Langtry, Texas. Fun Fact: This tiny town may have been named after Lilly Langtry, a person mentioned in Quentin Tarantino film, The Hateful Eight. When I saw the film, I bet I was the only person in the theater to make the connection. LOL
