Without a doubt this has become the busiest semester at the Viz Lab. Enrollment at TAMU exceeded 50,000 students this fall. The BS-Viz and MS-Viz programs have also expanded to record numbers. After welcoming 26 new graduate students, current enrollment for the MS program stands at 89. Supporting the grad program and all the undergrads in our department keeps me busy, but I enjoy the chaos….and it makes the work day fly by.
May 2-7, 2011 Over the years, the number of students I help support has grown, especially when the Visualization Program became its own department. To be honest, I like all the chaos because there’s never a dull moment. The VIST Show (undergrad) and Viz-a-gogo (graduate) are important events for the students. Prior to the screening, [...]
July 25-30, 2010 I spent the last week of July with fellow TAMU staff, faculty, and students at SIGGRAPH 2010 in Las Angeles, CA. SIGGRAPH is the annual conference on computer graphics convened by the ACM SIGGRAPH organization. Thousands of CG artists, researchers, developers and producers gather for this conference. FYI: SIGGRAPH is short for [...]
June 7 – 23, 2010 There’s no summer “down time” in my department. During the summer sessions, our students participate in an industry-animation-course. The Department of Visualization collaborates with one of the leading animation studios to give the students a condensed “real-world” production experience. This year, students taking the Summer Industry Course (VIZA 627) will [...]
May 12, 2010 The best thing about my job – meeting and working with really great people. The worst thing about my job – saying goodbye to really great people. I don’t know what it is about the Viz Department (maybe it’s the geek factor) but most of the students I interact with I consider [...]
April 2, 2010 I always enjoy seeing former students when they come back to Aggieland. Keith Klohn and Angelique Reisch returned to the Viz Lab to spend two days interviewing students for internships and PUP (PIXAR’s Undergraduate Program). During their first evening back in Aggieland, Keith and Angelique spoke to a crowd of students, parents, [...]
November 20, 2009
It’s always fun to have former students come back to the Viz Lab. Most of the time the former students return to talk about the movies their currently doing, review the work of the current students, or conduct interviews for job openings or internships.
August 29, 2009
The final week of August was spent doing non-stop preparation work for the begining of yet another academic year. The 28th and 29th marked VizCamp, an orientation session for our incoming first-years.
